What are the differences between DC 5521 and DC 5525? Are they interchangeable?

1. Differences between DC 5521 and DC 5525

Differences-between-DC-5521-and-DC-5525

The numbers stand for outer diameter × inner diameter (unit: mm). Both have an outer diameter of 5.5 mm, and the main difference lies in the inner diameter:
  • DC cable 5521: Inner diameter 2.1 mm
  • DC cable 5525: Inner diameter 2.5 mm

Key features

  • Appearance: The outer shells look identical and hard to tell apart visually; only the center pin differs in thickness.
  • Current capacity: The thicker center pin of 5525 supports higher current, so it is used for high-power devices. 5521 is designed for regular low-current equipment.
  • Polarity: Both follow the common standard of center positive, outer sleeve negative.

2. Interchangeability

  1. 5521 male plug into 5525 female jack
It can be inserted, but there will be excessive clearance. Poor contact may cause intermittent power cuts and arcing. It also generates extra heat under high current. Not recommended for long-term use.
  2. 5525 male plug into 5521 female jack
The thicker center pin cannot fit in at all. This combination is completely unusable.

Summary

  • The two types are not fully interchangeable.
  • A 5521 plug can be temporarily used with a 5525 port in an emergency, but potential safety risks exist. Reverse matching never works.
  • Always choose connectors with the exact matching specifications for replacement.
